Why Prion free? Latest research suggest that BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy, commonly known as "mad cow disease") can also be the result of genetic mutations with the prion protein gene. These findings are significant because they tell us that the disease can occur anywhere in the world, even in the so-called "BSE-free" countries. BSE requires the prion protein gene to develop.
